Picture a 3 m by 3 m study with a desk, a bookshelf and exactly one free outlet. That room is what a small air purifier is made for. The Ion Air Purifier is 11.25 cm x 5 cm x 4 cm and weighs 120 g, so it disappears into the outlet and out of your way.
If you are weighing up a mini, compact or portable unit, this guide shows how to size one, where it belongs, and what it really costs to live with. We also point you to the guides that go deeper on dust, mould and sleep.
Small means the room, not the box
Shops use five words for one idea: mini, compact, personal, desktop and portable. None of them answers the question that matters, which is how many square metres a unit can look after. This one lists rooms up to 11 m2. It draws under 3 watts and has no filters, fans or motors, which is how it stays at 120 g. Read every small air purifier the same way: coverage first, upkeep second, looks third.
The EPA is blunt about why coverage is the figure to trust:
โdesigned to filter the air in a single room or areaโ
A small unit does one room well. So the question is never whether it can clean a house. It is how many rooms you want covered.
The outlet is the whole installation
Portable, for this unit, means light enough to unplug and carry to the next room. It plugs into a standard Australian wall outlet, so it has no battery and it is not meant for cars or tents. What you get in return is simplicity. No cable across the desk, nothing on the shelf, nothing to assemble.
That suits renters especially. There are no tools and no approval to ask for, and the unit leaves with you when the lease ends. If you want the longer story on how plug-in units work and what they cost, our guide to a plug-in air purifier in Australia covers it.
Walk around a small flat with a tape measure
Say you rent a two-bedroom flat. The main bedroom is 3.2 m x 3.1 m, about 9.9 m2, so it takes one unit. The second bedroom doubles as a study at 3 m x 2.5 m, or 7.5 m2: one unit. The lounge is 4.4 m x 3.8 m, about 16.7 m2, which needs two. That is four units, and the Home Pack is built for exactly that.
The method never changes: length times width, divide by 11, round up. For a whole house with five or six rooms, our guide to an air purifier for home works through three complete examples.
Put it where you breathe
The best spot is the outlet nearest the place you spend the most hours. For most people that is the bedside. The National Asthma Council notes that moving about in bed stirs allergen into the air, so a unit right there is working at the right moment.
If bedroom air is your main concern, read what the research says about whether an air purifier can improve sleep, and the routine in our dust mite bedroom guide.
At a desk, pick the outlet closest to your chair. In a child's room, the maker designs the unit to be safe around kids and pets, and you should keep the unit and its cord out of small hands. Wherever it goes, leave clear space and keep it away from curtains, as the EPA advises.
A unit is one part of a bedroom routine, not all of it. ASCIA recommends washing bedding in water hotter than 60ยฐC and covering mattresses and pillows. Do those two things, add the unit by the bed, and you have covered the biggest source of dust mite allergen and the air around it.
Have a small room in mind?
Living with a small air purifier costs almost nothing
Three watts running all day, every day, is about 26 kWh a year. At an example rate of 30 cents per kWh, that is roughly $8. The maker says it costs less than $1 a month in most homes, and your own tariff will decide the exact figure. There is nothing else to buy, because the EPA notes that all filters need regular replacement and this unit has none.
It is worth saying what that means in practice. A cheap unit with a filter keeps costing you each time the filter is due. A unit with no filter is one purchase.
Three small rooms, three different jobs
The student room. At 7.5 m2 it is comfortably within one unit, and the outlet beside the bed does the job. Nothing to install, nothing for the landlord to approve.
The nursery. Quiet matters most here. The maker calls the design whisper-quiet, with no fan or motor listed. The unit and its cord stay out of reach of small children.
The home office. A study of 9 m2 needs one unit, placed at the outlet nearest the desk. If you also fight dust on the shelves, our guide on whether an air purifier removes dust explains what to expect.
When one small unit is not enough
A room above 11 m2 needs two units, ideally at opposite ends. A home with several rooms needs one per room. That is what the packs on the AeroPure Home page are for: the Bedroom Pack has 2 units and saves 25%, the Home Pack has 4 and saves 35%, and the Whole Home Pack has 6 and saves 45%.
Here is the sum for a main bedroom of 4.2 m x 3.5 m, which is 14.7 m2. Divide by 11 and you get 1.3, so round up to two units. At the $120 single-unit price listed on the AeroPure Home page, two singles cost $240, while the Bedroom Pack costs $180 and saves $60. Prices can change with sales, so check the page for today's figure.
Damp rooms are a good example of where a second unit helps. The National Asthma Council says mould is common in bedrooms with ensuites and in built-in wardrobes, and our air purifier for mould guide explains the full plan. For the wider picture on allergies in the home, see our guide to managing indoor allergies.
What to check before you buy any small air purifier
Four things tell you almost everything. First, the coverage in square metres, because a unit with no stated area is a guess. Second, the wattage, which sets your electricity bill. Third, whether it has a fan, because fans are where most of the noise comes from, and whether it has filters, because they are where most of the ongoing cost comes from.
Fourth, the delivery window and the return policy, because a trial only works if you can send it back. Hold this unit up against those four and it answers each one on its product page. That is also why we like small units for first-time buyers: there is very little to get wrong.
Quick answers
Does a mini air purifier work in a big room?
It looks after the room it sits in. For anything above 11 m2, use two units or more.
Is it quiet enough for a bedroom?
No fan or motor is listed, and the maker calls it whisper-quiet. Most people never notice it is there.
Can I leave it on all night?
Yes, it is designed to run 24/7. The manufacturer says it produces no harmful ozone. As with any ioniser, you can ask for the ozone test information and check the CARB list and the AHAM directory, and our guide asks whether ion air purifiers are safe.
How long until it arrives?
Orders are processed in 1 to 3 business days, then take 5 to 10 business days from dispatch. Shipping is free and tracked, and the refund policy gives you 60 days from delivery. More answers are on the FAQ page.
The smallest purchase that changes a room
AeroPure says the unit helps reduce dust and dust mites that can affect indoor air quality, and that many customers notice a fresher indoor environment within the first few days. The EPA reminds us why the air in our own rooms is worth the effort:
โAmericans, on average, spend approximately 90 percent of their time indoorsโ
Start with one room, the one where you spend the most hours. You can see the full range in the collection, or go straight to the Ion Air Purifier and try it for 60 days.
